Park Cleaning Tomorrow (4/17/10)

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Hello friends!

Tomorrow (Saturday, 4/17) will be out at Lawrence’s South Park (12th and Mass St) cleaning. We plan to start at 9 am and be done in an hour. We will provide gloves, bags and lots of motivation!

Parking is on the northeast side of the park (on E North Park St). Parking is metered, so don’t forget. We’ll bring coins to share.

Last year’s parking cleaning series went really well. We gave back to Lawrence’s community and helped make South Park beautiful.

When you arrive, we’ll show you where Isabelle’s Park Bench was installed and where the memorial trees were planted.

Reminder: this year, we’ll be cleaning every 3rd Saturday of the month from April through October.

We hope to see you there!

Warmest regards,

Chris & Amanda Ellis

Adventures of Isabelle

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Turned on the radio this morning to hear that an amazing artist (Natalie Merchant) has put old children’s poetry into song and created an album. I studied a lot of poetry in college so I immediately became immersed. Hearing her sing some of the poems was absolutely amazing. I plan to get the CD, but while researching the story behind the story, I found that Natalie wrote a song by Ogden Nash called “Adventures of Isabel”. She turned this great little poem (which I had never seen before) into a very cute, upbeat, jug-band style song that you’ll just have to hear. I am posting the lyrics here:Adventures Of Isabel

Adventures Of Isabel

Isabel met an enormous bear,
Isabel, Isabel, didn’t care;
The bear was hungry, the bear was ravenous,
The bear’s big mouth was cruel and cavernous.
The bear said, Isabel, glad to meet you,
How do, Isabel, now I’ll eat you!
Isabel, Isabel, didn’t worry.
Isabel didn’t scream or scurry.
She washed her hands and she straightened her hair up,
Then Isabel quietly ate the bear up.
Once in a night as black as pitch
Isabel met a wicked old witch.
the witch’s face was cross and wrinkled,
The witch’s gums with teeth were sprinkled.
Ho, ho, Isabel! the old witch crowed,
I’ll turn you into an ugly toad!
Isabel, Isabel, didn’t worry,
Isabel didn’t scream or scurry,
She showed no rage and she showed no rancor,
But she turned the witch into milk and drank her.
Isabel met a hideous giant,
Isabel continued self reliant.
The giant was hairy, the giant was horrid,
He had one eye in the middle of his forhead.
Good morning, Isabel, the giant said,
I’ll grind your bones to make my bread.
Isabel, Isabel, didn’t worry,
Isabel didn’t scream or scurry.
She nibled the zwieback that she always fed off,
And when it was gone, she cut the giant’s head off.
Isabel met a troublesome doctor,
He punched and he poked till he really shocked her.
The doctor’s talk was of coughs and chills
And the doctor’s satchel bulged with pills.
The doctor said unto Isabel,
Swallow this, it will make you well.
Isabel, Isabel, didn’t worry,
Isabel didn’t scream or scurry.
She took those pills from the pill concocter,
And Isabel calmly cured the doctor.

-Ogden Nash

This poem is Isabelle. It shows all her characteristics. She is adventurous, she’s is full of spirit, she is a lady, she is not afraid and she has poise and control. I cannot stop reading the last 9 lines. They literally stopped me in my tracks…

That was how Isabelle handled her last few months of battle. She was strong, showed no sign of weakness and she cured the Dr’s (and the rest of us) of our many false perceptions. She showed us that you can be strong and still be a Princess. You can experience tremendous pain and still have grace. You can do what others say is best for you and in the end show them you were right.

I would love to post the song, but hopefully you’ll get to hear it through radio, TV or by heading down to the music store. You can look up the CD “Leave Your Sleep” by Natalie Merchant or you can go here for a digital download (99 cents).

Enjoy.

Isabelle, you are such an amazing littler girl and we miss you very much. You are my little adventurer…

Spring Has Arrived!

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Hello friends and family,

We have a lot of exciting things to talk about. I’ll break it down like this:

First, we are starting up the Lawrence South Park cleaning project again this year. We had a lot of fun doing this last year and it was a great excuse to get some exercise, be with some friends and visit a park! The plan is to do the cleaning every 3rd Saturday of the month from April to October. So, that would make April 17th the first date. If you’d love to get out of the house for an hour, come on by Lawrence’s South Park at 9 am that Saturday. We will provide gloves and bags. We’ve entertained the idea of bringing donuts, but since this is a park-cleaning deal, we didn’t know if mixing food was a good idea. haha (Parking: park on the north west part of the park on E North Park St. The spots are now metered so bring some coins. See you there!!

Second, we are now officially having a 1st Annual Isabelle Ellis Memorial Golf Benefit this year! Whether you like to play golf or not, join us on June 16th from 1-8 pm (Golf from 1-5 and Dinner/Auction from 6-8). I will be posting all the details soon, so start thinking about a team. We are partnering with a Kansas City Charity called Gift of Life, whose mission is to spread awareness about organ donation. They do so many great things for the community, it’s amazing. The event will run all afternoon and end with a great dinner and silent auction event. So, if you don’t golf, join us for dinner! Mark your calendar for June 16th! More info to come.

Third, the website retool has taken longer than expected. Thus, the new bracelet sale page is not up yet. We have 100’s of bracelets for sale and we’ll be selling them online soon so hang in there! If you want to help us sell, please contact us using the contacts page, we’ll definitely take any volunteers. It makes for a great community project!

Next, we’ll be attending Cooper’s Cause Bowl-A-Thon on April 10th from 1-2 pm. If you feel like you want to join us, let us know, if not, I am sure they’ll love to see you regardless. Head over to this site to check out the details: http://www.cooperscause.com/bowl-a-thon-2010.html. Cooper’s Cause helped us during our hospital stay in KC and they are a great cause for the Lawrence Community.

Fifth, our 1st annual Isabelle Ellis Memorial Scholarship at Children’s Mercy is off to a great start. We have many applicants to choose from and we’ll be selecting a lucky nurse very soon. Then we’ll get to present a check to that special nurse at a wonderful lunch event at the hospital. It’s a great way to remember Isabelle, help the nursing community and to give back. The $500 scholarship will go towards tuition and/or books. We’re very excited!

Also, Gift of Life has a really great event coming up! It’s call Go See Do and it looks like a TON of fun. Per the site:

GoSeeDoKC is a unique fundraising event for Gift of Life that you won’t want to miss!  It all takes place on a saturday afternoon. Guests select from one of ten tours that take you behind the scenes at some of Kansas City’s most unique venues followed by a celebration and auction at Starlight Theatre’s Helzberg Diamonds’ VIP Club. All tours begin at 1 pm and the celebration starts at 3 pm…..or as soon as you get there!

I highly encourage you to hop on into this event. Isabelle’s HOPE charity’s mission is about giving back to the community, raising awareness of heart defects & disease and about advocating for organ donation. Gift of Life is such an amazing charity that really hits a home run regarding the advocating for organ donation. We are so happy to be involved with them and we can’t say how important it is to show support for this organization. Naturally, we’re looking at the #1 event: Chocolate! Isabelle loved, loved, loved chocolate and so does her father. :)

Finally, we want to thank everyone for their continued support. Thanks to all those who made such loving, caring donations of time and money to us. We plan to put every dollar to use as a part of our mission. We’re managing right now with a very low overhead so that means maximum effect for your donations!

We’re so happy that Spring has arrived and we’re very excited about all the activities this year. Please keep watching for our next update and reminders about these great events.

Warmest regards,

With love,

Chris, Amanda, ^Isabelle^, Elorah and Big Ben
